Website Master Planning

My father owns a contracting company that builds and remodels hospitals. He always talks about Master Planning and I’ve always thought it was just some fancy word for drawing blueprints, or some diabolical system for ensuring that a hospital has to use my dad’s firm in the future to expand. Well, it turns out Master Planning is actually key to ensuring that a facility can grow beyond its current design without major reconstruction of the current structure. Brilliant.

Having been a part of so many site redesigns over the years I realized how critical Master Planning was to a website’s growth. The devil is in the details. When planning a site redesign it’s critical that certain items are looked at with an eye to the future. Site structure, section themeing, conversion funnels, directory structure, page naming, server platform, blog implementation, internal linking, shopping cart implementation, and external linking campaigns all need to be carefully planned and executed. If any one of these is overlooked it could cause major headaches in the future. For example, a site redesign with no consideration for the external links could see a drastic loss of position in the search engines.

So if master planning a site is so important, when should it start? At the beginning. One of the first people you should contact when you are thinking about a website redesign is a skilled search engine optimizer who is experienced in Master Planning a website. Developing the site structure, writing content, naming pages, and building all the site components before consulting a professional SEO can end up costing you a lot of money. I’ve dealt with a lot of companies who hired a designer that said they understood search engine optimization only to find out that they did not. In some cases, everything except the color scheme had to change to be friendly to the search engines, and to future growth.

Don’t take chances when you hire an SEO. Ask about past experiences. Ask for case studies. Ask for examples of work. A novice SEO can sink a website. An expert will ensure that the site can grow beyond what you thought possible.
