Doubt the Power of SEO? Compare to PPC!

A client recently wanted me to justify continuing our ongoing SEO services. I’m not mad at them, it’s a natural thing for a company owner to ask.  The main thing owners see is the constant expense.  Business owners tend to look forward instead of backwards so they often overlook the real impact of SEO on their business. As an SEO it’s a little disheartening to have to defend your efforts, but it’s important to keep your chin up and keep a positive attitude.  If you get upset and defensive in your response you can quickly sour an otherwise wonderful relationship.

I decided that a good way to communicate the value of our work was to show the client what it would take to use Adwords to buy the traffic that we’ve delivered to them from the free organic listings.  The client came to us in early 2012 with about 3,000 organic visits per day.  Their recent organic high-point was 16,000 visits per day.  That’s a difference of about 13,000 visits per day. I used their target phrases in Google’s Keyword Planner to estimate the cost of replacing the traffic we drive to them using PPC. It would cost them nearly $14,000.00 PER DAY to replace the traffic we have driven to them organically!  That’s nearly $5,000,000.00 per year!  I’m beginning to think I don’t charge enough…
